Wildfire near Boulder, June 26, 2012
The Flagstaff wildfire erupted June 26, 2012 in the foothills south of the Boulder Flatirons. Southwesterly winds blew the flames and smoke over the summit of South Boulder Peak and onto neighboring Bear Mountain. At the moment the fire is small compared to the devastating Waldo Canyon and High Park fires, but after a week of record temperatures in the 100s, any fire can quickly become a major disaster. -
Denver's Roller Dolls gear up for bout
Mix roller skating with a little hockey, demolition derbies and lots of attitude, and you get - Roller Derby. Denver's Roller Dolls teams - the Green Barrettes, the Bad Apples and the Shotgun Betties - held a scrimmage Wednesday night to prepare for their public bout this Saturday, April 17. Colorado's small libraries: Part 2 - Wetmore
The Community Library in Wetmore, Colorado, serves a population of 509 - the smallest of any public library in the state. It survives on recreational funds from the Colorado Lottery distributed by Custer County, by individual donations of books and money - and by the hard work and good spirits of the people of Wetmore. -
Death of a newspaper
On Dec. 4, 2008, Colorado's oldest newspaper, the Rocky Mountain News, was put up for sale by corporate owner E. W. Scripps. It was a victim of the economic crisis that began in 2008 and a more general collapse of traditional advertising-supported media in an internet age. Rocky staffers and concerned readers launched an effort to prove the paper still had market support in Denver and Colorado, through the website IWantMyRocky.com - but to no avail. The Rocky published its final edition one year ago, on Feb 27, 2009. -
Colorado's small libraries: Part 1 - Nucla
Nucla, Colorado (pop. 732) lies isolated on the western rim of the Uncompaghre Plateau, 90 highway miles west of Montrose and 110 south of Grand Junction. One of its key links to the outside world is the small public library at 544 Main St., where students and residents can browse the web, use the collection of 6,600 books, CDs and DVDs, or pick up books borrowed from other Colorado libraries. -
Justice for Buddy rally
On Wednesday, January 27, 2010, Steven Romero was arraigned in federal court and pled not guilty to a charge of aggravated animal cruelty in the case of Buddy, a dog allegedly dragged to death behind a truck on federal land in the Colorado National Monument. About a dozen demonstrators demanding justice for Buddy stood on the steps outside the Wayne N. Aspinall federal building in Grand Junction, Colorado, during the hearing. -

Thousands came out to celebrate the legacy of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Monday, January 18, in Denver's 25th annual Martin Luther King Day Marade. -
2010 Stock Show Parade
Longhorns marched through LoDo and up 17th St. Tuesday, Jan 12 as the National Western Stock Show celebrated with its annual parade through Denver. -
Denver welcomes 2010
We survived 2009, and welcomed in 2010 last night. Thousands in Denver celebrated along the 16th St. Mall. Young and old, in crowds and in private moments, we waited under a full moon for the stroke of midnight.
